Great analysis. The first point resonates most with my personal experience of both sustainability and social media. Although there may be a generational gap between sustainability and social media folks - first tending to be older, not as enamored with Web 2.0 -, both groups fit early adopters/pioneer mentality.

Did you see post I wrote today about sustainability wikis?

Just added points 4. and 5. to the original post at http://www.maxgladwell.com/2008/08/ten-ways-that-social-media-and-sustainability-align/#comment-1270.

Whole system thinking is a principle we apply pretty universally, but it's especially important when it comes to sustainability and social media practices. Further, these two should be integrated within those systems.

I think you nailed it with points 2 and 4. Grassroots movements is a hallmark of sustainable organizations, and whole system thinking is just what a sustainable system is all about.
