I had a farm and farm shop and through this attempted to enlighten consumers to think green and alter their purchasing habits accordingly. I soon realized that I was fighting a loosing battle. Most consumers recognized that this was a sensible way to go but convenience shopping won the day. Price, convenience, location and variety cannot be competed against when business sustainability is paramount. If the big four supermarkets in the UK can honestly do as good a job on greeening their processes and products as they have done on bringing convenience shopping to the consumer, then sustainability will have a chance to reach the majority.
