Making Money with a sense of Check and Balance thrown in
by clare munn
Last week I was in Cincinnati and staying with my business partner’s family. Her gorgeous (giant) one year old twin boys were crying one night and I decided to be a ‘good person’ and relieve my hosts of the duty. Trying to figure out how to carry two 28 pound babies at once was the first task – turns out they are both so in tune with one another they just wait their turns and immediately quietened in consternation as I cooed and ahhed at them. 24 hours later I was on a plane back to Manhattan and I had immediate recollections of my other business partner’s horrific journey back from Austin one year when he’d had too much of a party the night before. The poor man looked like a very skinny sweating Shrek. God was he ill, and I gave him a hard time. Anyway, I now felt how he looked and had some remorse at my strong belief in karma. Short story long was I had contracted the twins rota virus (rota rooter got its branding from this virus i believe) — it keeps you married to the bathroom for up to 5 days straight. Not a fun experience at all – disgusting and deadly boring. I am just coming out of it and feel a profound sense of change coming over my entire being (not just the 5-10 pounds I lost either) I’d had a lot of time to think during these past five days.
I thought of the 2 flights I take on average each week criss-crossing the country as if I was Verizon itself. I thought of the amount of times I actually get to sleep at home — the amount of time I get to see my own family and community. Results were rather pathetic.
We all know this and I want to walk my talk better: Problem solving/Making Money is absolutely stupid unless there is balance thrown into and heavily around the equation.
Besides:
1) I love sustainability thinking and doing
2) I adore Skype
3) and isn’t all this social media strategy work I do meant to help all this new virtual way??
4) finally, I am Zimbabwean for goodness sakes — we love to play and we love our sense of belonging.
Even though I am no longer contagious, I have canceled my flight tomorrow, and decided the next one will be only when I go to www.ted.com — the event of the year I truly enjoy, along with www.urbanzen.com forums – they are the ones when I really feel like a giant kindergarden child on speed.
I do hope you are balancing your life, and if so I look forward to learning more from you on how to do it better.
Be well, and thank you for checking in. -c
